Trouvee's Babies a picture journal
This past winter we have had 5 cats living around our home. We have fed them and have tried to help them get through the winter. This spring we noticed one of our favorites was pregnant. We knew she would have a very hard time having her babies outside with the terrible weather and the threat from the big toms living around here. We decided she needed to come into our home and have her babies where it was warm and safe. With the help of a friend who rescues cats, we were able to trap her and bring her in the house on April 16. We were thrilled as it gave us time to show her we would not harm her and she had a chance to adjust to being in the house. She quickly adjusted to living with us. She ate well, used the kitty litter box and slept continually for the first three days. She then investigated the room she is in to determine where to have her babies. We named her Trouvee which means found in French. She seems to like her new name. On Sunday afternoon, April 26, Trouvee gave birth to her kittens. She had them in the house I had made for her so it was hard to know just how many little people there were . On first count we thought 3, then 4 then a recount 5 and yes there are 6. Four white kittens and 2 orange. The white kittens are marked just like Siamese. The first 2 days they were all white and now their ears are turning gray. Trouvee certainly is part Siamese and she is a wonderful mother. Trouvee does not mind a camera being pointed at her nest and lets me take pictures. She is not thrilled if I physically get too close to her babies but she tolerates me. I will post pictures every few days so you can watch this journey with me. When the kittens are old enough to go to new homes we will have Trouvee spayed and hopefully blend her into our group of Emma, Andrew and Vinnie. Just an aside only Emma is aware something is happening, the boys don't have a clue! Welcome to our fun!

Week 1 - May 4, 2009 Tourvee and the gang are doing great. The 2 orange kittens are huge compared to their little white siblings. They are all very active and climb all over Trouvee. Their eyes will start to open later this week and I will post a picture of them when they do. I am so glad they are all safe in our home. Trouvee is inside a 22 gallon storage bin that I flipped upside down for her. I put a fleece pet bed in the bottom of the bin, cut a hole in the side and created this makeshift home for her. This is the reason everything looks a little blue.
May 6, 2009 After I posted the Week 1 picture I could not explain how the kitten under Trouvee's chin seemed to be in two parts and I was suspicious there was yet another kitten. I checked this morning and there are indeed 3 orange kittens and four white so she has seven. This might explain why Trouvee has eaten half a nine pound bag of dry cat food in three weeks. She also has snacks 3 times a day. they are all thriving so she must be feeding them adequately. I don't think there are any more hiding.

May 11, 2009 Two weeks old and moving around. Trouvee continues to be a wonderful mother to these babies. She stays with them all the time. The kittens are quiet and contented and obviously growing. Trouvee is very protective of them but comes out to eat while I am in the room so she is trusting me more each day. Hopefully when the kittens start becoming more independent Trouvee and I can become better friends.

May 17, 2009 3 weeks old today As you can see growing has been on the agenda. the kittens have not yet adventured out of their nest, one tried and immediately she was pulled back in by Trouvee. I think by the end of this week they will start exploring. I am dying to touch them but I am holding back out of respect for their mom. Trouvee is still taking wonderful care of them but now she comes out and naps on a towel and relaxes for a few moments before returning to her brood.

4 Weeks Old! May 24, 2009 We did it! Trouvee has been with us for 6 weeks and the kittens are 4 weeks old today. They are active and busy and delightful to watch. Trouvee lets me pick them up however she does not want me to touch her yet. I have tried giving them kitten gruel and when I do Trouvee eats it so I think she does not want me to feed them yet. Tomorrow I will remove a baby at a time and start feeding them out of Trouvee's sight. They are not afraid of me or any sounds happening in the house which is very good. This has been a very rewarding experience and I know the people who have asked for a kitten will give them loving, caring homes.

May 31, 2009 5 weeks old. No more group pictures, they are off and running! Trouvee loves them to pieces but she is ready to escape them for periods of time. They are everywhere. 5 of them have started to eat on their own but the 2 little white ones don't think it is such a good idea yet. They all play, love to be snuggled, and sleep so very soundly when they are done running. This has been a wonderful experience for me. Soon they will be leaving us and going off to their new homes and I will truly miss this gang. I am so thankful they were able to be safe in our home.

Homeward Bound June 25, 2009 They are going to their new homes. It is hard for me but Trouvee seems to be relieved. Three kittens left on thursday and 2 more are going soon. I still need to find homes for one little orange and one little one one. I was surprised at how attached I am to these little furry beings. My next adventure is to introduce Trouvee to Emma, Andrew and Vinnie. Hopefully all will go well and soon I will be posting pictures of them playing together. Maybe by Christmas.
