![]() | I loved the background material for this quilt. I bought it and then decided what I was going to do with it! The birds are from East Africa. The flowers are Magnolias and the vines were done with free motion using neon thread. I added the embellishments after a trip to the quilt show in Rosemont, Illinois. The border is beaded with Saworski crystals and they do shine when the light hits them.

Africa Day 2 I found this hibiscus background at a local fabric shop. I had seen a quilt in Hancock's catalogue with the lions on it and decided that's what I needed and this quilt was born. I made the border blocks, then cut the fabric to fit the center. Way much easier than doing it the traditional way. The leaves above the elephant are dimensional. I had never tried trapunto so the tummy of the zebra, the mane of the lion and the elephant trunk are trapuntoed. I added beaded centers to some of the hibiscus and to some of the leaves. The border is beaded with variegated green beads. I added them after the binding was finished. I learned the border beading in a class with Mary Stori.

Summer Clematis 18" x 24" Our garden produced these lovely flowers and I put them to fabric in a class with Nancy Sewell. I worked from a photograph I had taken. It was an easy and fun project to do and reminds me why I love the summer in our garden.

"What's For Dinner?" Here I am with my 3 lovely kitties. They are constantly hungry, either for food or attention. My bird clock is chiming. I am holding symbols of some my favorite things in my right hand, gardening, cards and quilting. My left hand is a bowl of mice and on my shoulder is one of my pet birds. On Emma's tail is a bow from a collection of fabric she won from the cat contest run by Benartex in 2001. It was a basket of fat quarters from Mary Lou Weidman's Cherry Jubilee. Two years after this prize I took a class from Mary Lou and this quilt emerged from there.

Fanciful Flowers The guild I belong to, West Suburban Quilt Guild, had a fabric challenge. I manipulated the fabric to create the center of the blocks and then sewed it end to end for the strips around the blocks. The border fabric was a companion piece. I cut flowers from that and using the Broderie Perse method fused them to the center block. I did a checkerboard inner border and a striped white for the background. I quilted it by following the stripes in the white fabric. I also was lucky enough to win the challenge.

Window Birds If you have an old window you don't know what to do with, here is a suggestion.... I made the quilt, put on a binding and hand quilted it. I then added a muslin strip to the binding and stapled it to the back of the window frame. I applied white glue to the outside edge of the frame and laid a piece of craft paper over the back and let the glue set for just a couple of minutes. Then using sandpaper I worked around the edge of the frame removing the excess paper. It has a beautiful back on it and the quilt is protected from the frame and the air with this method. (The white areas on the picture are just reflections and not part of the picture.)
